Why not?
Because art seems to have lost its fun factor. It feels like everyone is benefiting from art except for the authors.
The world needs art from living artists who can create masterpieces without being financially exploited by a wealthy minority. Art should be accessible to the majority, not just the 1% who have millions to pay for pieces that should be common property. Art should not be something behind bars, barring people from enjoying it.
Friedrich Nietzsche considered art to be the highest expression of life and self-expression. He also believed that artists were among the most noble and revered citizens of society.
We like that. We think many people in the art world have forgotten this. We would like to remind them again.
Call me sentimental, but when I say this, I think of Montmartre, France from back in the days, its cafes, and artists doing their stuff, changing the world, trying stuff, failing, trying again, discussing, arguing and creating.
Or New York's alternative spaces that appeared throughout the 1970s, courtesy of avant-garde artists whose wish was to emancipate art from the institutional and commercial pressures of the art world.
I feel like it's important to give some control back to the artists. A discussion on Mastodon with an artist inspired me to find a way to do this.
There are no guidelines or business plans for this place. There is art, a gut feeling, an e-shop, and ample room for many of you.
Think of this place as a nursery. It's a safehouse, a safe haven with fertile ground for ideas and potential.
